What is a Young Carer?
A Young Carer is somebody who cares for, or is affected by, a family member who may have:
- A serious or long-term illness
- A physical disability
- A mental health problem
- Problems with drugs or alcohol
- A learning disability
- Difficulties in coping with being a parent or carer
Young Carers may carry out tasks and household jobs like:
- Preparing and cooking food
- Helping with personal care and hygiene
- Giving medication
- Communicating on someone’s behalf
- Ensuring someone’s safety
- Providing emotional support
- Paying bills
Doing some of these tasks might make it hard for young carers to come to school and may impact their ability to focus and concentrate to the best of their ability.
The Nest
Our Young Carers group, known as ‘The Nest’, has been developed to support children within our school that care in a range of ways for somebody important to them.
The group meets weekly (Thursdays, 3.15pm – 4.15 pm) and offers our children the opportunity to come together and take part in fun activities, giving them a sense of community and teaching them valuable life skills at the same time.
These activities include:
- Arts and crafts
- Board games
- Cooking
- Escape rooms
- End of term treats!
If you would like to know more about The Nest and what makes somebody a young carer, please contact our Senco (Miss Laura Stimpson) or Parent Support Advisor (Mrs Emily Northmore).
